The Council of State on Tuesday ordered Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin to take Nupes into consideration as “a political nuance in its own right” during the legislative elections, giving reason to Jean-Luc Mélenchon who had seized him in summary proceedings.

The Council of State considered that “counting the political parties of this coalition separately can undermine the sincerity of the presentation of the electoral results”, he explained in a press release.

Mr. Darmanin had decided “not to bring together, under a single nuance, the political parties having created the coalition of the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (NUPES)” resulting from the agreement between LFI, the PS, EELV and the PCF , recalled the Council of State.

The judge in chambers therefore considered that the color chart put in place by the Minister of the Interior would group together under the label Together! the results of the presidential majority, while environmental candidates invested by Nupes, for example, would be “recognized under another nuance with other environmental movements not belonging” to the alliance.

The Ministry of the Interior took note on Twitter “of the decision of the Council of State on the nuance of the candidates for the legislative elections”. “It will proceed with the modification of the shades grid in order to create the Nupes shade”, he assured.

Also on Twitter, the rebellious chef Jean-Luc Mélenchon shouted “victory”. “The Council of State validates the obligation for Darmanin to appoint us and to count us as Nupes for the legislative elections. Darmanin and Macron must stop their hacks and shenanigans”, he added.

“Victory!”, Also exclaimed the boss of EELV Julien Bayou, seeing it as a “huge snub for the Minister of the Interior who had dared this maneuver and recognized the common banner of his movement but not ours”.

The communist Ian Brossat also welcomed that “the rough manipulations of the Minister of the Interior have just taken the wall of the Council of State”.

The left alliance had denounced the political color chart of the Ministry of the Interior for the elections of June 12 and 19 which did not take into account the Nupes in the registrations of candidates with the prefectures.
