Overview

You’ll hear legends and stories of romance, tragedy, triumph, piracy and shipwreck. You’ll see the sophisticated and lavish homes of the songwriters and their singers, the railroad barons, the captains of industry, and those of the rich and famous. You’ll see the haunts of villains and vagabonds of North American borders. Tall tales these may seem, but Gananoque lives by such realities. The legendary town 20 minutes of Kingston, Ontario, is part of Canada’s impeccable Thousand Islands. Gananoque is an aboriginal term for the “town between two rivers”. Nestled on the banks of the scenic St. Lawrence River, the town has several summer residents because of its Thousand Islands. Gananoque offers beaches, canoeing, challenging golf courses, bountiful fishing, and a wide variety of enjoyable outdoor activities. You will be seeing the best accommodations and attractions in Canada—it’s time to live the tale.

Things to Do

Though the summer islanders easily double the population, Gananoque offers the perfect getaway amidst any season. It is fortunate enough to possess one of Canada’s most popular marinas. Several boats are available for rent. The city boasts of practice ranges and well-designed golf courses that will tempt golfers of all skill levels. Movie theaters, bowling lanes, walking tours, miniature golf, and ATV trail all offer vacation treats for the entire family. Boaters can bring their vessels and dock in front of the Playhouse to watch selected matinees and evening performances.

Tourist Attractions

The Thousand Islands Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve is one of only 400 in the world. The biosphere is the region’s top attraction. There are several boat cruises, live theaters, and restaurants in the area. The Arthur Child Heritage Museum of the Thousand Islands, the Thousand Islands Playhouse, the Boldt Castle, and the OLG Casino can be found within the area. A monument can be found in front of the City Hall, as the town is home to legendary Johnny Sly. He was a home town hero who saved a family from the fire, but did not make it out alive. In commemoration to his heroic actions a bronze statue was erected.

Restaurants and Dining

The Trinity House Inn is well-recommended. Menus include unique dishes of Tuscan onions, Roasted Caprese Salads, escargot, scallop Parma, chicken parmigiana, and excellent-grade beef tenderloin. It was voted as B&B Magazine and North American Country Inns as the Best Canadian Inn for 2000, because of the combination of dining and lodging options. Gananoque Inn offers some of the best fine dining in the region. Tourists will experience Gananoque’s creative regional cuisine in its Watermark Restaurant. Tourists will enjoy a glass of wine and a plate of steak on its riverfront patio.
